Georgia's Mystery Boom

Authorities are stumped as to what caused a mysterious "sonic boom" heard by hundreds throughout a rural area of Georgia, late Friday night (November 26th, 2010).

911 switchboards across three counties were swamped with calls after a noise of unknown origin rattled windows and frightened residents. No damage or smoke was found and the National Weather Service had no explanation. The sky was clear at 9:45pm but no flash or object was seen and no military planes were present at the time (allegedly).

Perhaps it was a skyquake.

Ghost Light Transmissions - Silent Weaponry at Yakima, Washington

In a significant number of Ghost Lights reports, witnesses claim to have heard voices or felt strong emotions which strongly affected, or even dictated, their behavior. Many say they felt restrained, or even heard a voice telling them to, "Stay away!" or otherwise warning them of danger from the Ghost Light itself.

In other cases, they felt wildly compelled to leave the area and avoid the Ghost Lights entirely.  Those affected reported experiencing a panic state forcing a "Fight or Flight" response that was hard to ignore.

More remarkably, many of these reports involve ghost lights seen from hundreds of yards away or farther.  These peculiar cases, likely involving the use of silent weaponry technology, are particularly common to sightings of the Yakima Ghost Lights near the Yakima Indian Reservation in Washington state.

The OddBlog knows that the US military, and its various criminal offshoots, have technology specific to weaponized (manufactured) ball lightning, ghost lights, and mouth-to-skull broadcasts.

Ghost Adventures - Amargosa Opera House

Ghost Adventures
The Ghost Adventurers
The Amargosa Opera House is located in the middle of a very tiny town in Death Valley, California -- one of the most barren locations in the United States.  The huge structure sets on a defunct, 280-acre, borax mining complex and has played host to countless accidents, suicides, and deaths.

Guests struggle to stay the whole night at the hotel thanks to what is not just a paranormal presence, but a paranormal infestation.  The employees strongly believe there are a number of guests who "never checked out."  One of the main reasons the Ghost Adventures crew made the decision to come to the opera house is the un-renovated section called "Spooky Hollow."

Within this area are said to be several individual spirits with distinct personalities.  One of these spirits is known as "Boss Man" and, true to his name, he likes to pick on men -- specifically, big, macho men.

The Amargosa Opera House should be the exact type of location Zak, Nick, and Aaron like to investigate.

Power of Christ Compels Christian Actor to Chop-Up Mom

Authorities say 31-year-old actor, Michael Brea, has been admitted into psychiatric care after neighbors heard screams emanating from his apartment. When police arrived, Brea was screaming Bible passages at the mutilated corpse of his mother. Cops say Brea stabbed her numerous times and decapitated her. They believe he held her hostage for several hours.

Neighbors reported nothing unusual about the family or actor, calling them "quiet people." Brea appeared in TV sit-coms, movies, and even a Coca-Cola commercial campaign. He also owned a restaurant and was known to participate in charity work. "My parents raised me to always share and to give charity in the name of God!"

The Prophetic Ghost Lights of Golden Grove Bridge

Another Welsh term for Ghost Lights is Corpse Candles, which are believed to prophesy death in the area in which they appear.  The number of lights is said to indicate the number of lives soon to be lost.

One famous case claims witnesses on a coach saw three corpse candles as they crossed the river bridge near Golden Grove.  Several days later, three boating men capsized and drowned at the spot where the ghost lights had been seen!

Pages, a New Chapter

Blogger now provides individual pages like those found on competing blogging platforms. Technically, every post is a separate page, but posts are (usually) necessarily brief; if The OddBlog were a book, posts would be more like paragraphs. That is the structure I'm going for when preparing the Pages.

I know this is a more involved process but it is technically correct, and the results will be worth it; if I do workarounds from the start, it's just going to be that much harder to deconstruct and correct in the future.

I don't know where the Pages will appear or anything yet, as I have only looked into them briefly, but I will let you know more about them once I get to that point. As I am also toying with the design, I have no ETA for that announcement.

Rabid Bats Descend on L.A.

Los Angeles authorities have issued a warning to residents to stay away from the bats in and around the city, and keep their pets away from them as well, after finding over 20 rabies-infected bats in the city this year. One resident was treated for the virus after being bitten recently. Rabies can be fatal.

The Dudley Dorito: 2010

"The Dudley Dorito," a UFO named for its "tortilla chip-like" appearance, was spotted again on November 18th, 2010, over a house in Tipton, West Midlands. The sighting occurred only days after a hovering UFO was spotted in nearby Sutton Coldfield.

21-year-old Munesh Mistry claims he and a friend witnessed The Dudley Dorito fly past at an amazing rate, but at first thought it was a peculiar grouping of birds in flight. It was the tell-tale triangle -- the "Dorito" -- at the center of the formation which sent them scurrying inside.

When Mistry and his friend began researching online, they discovered the Dudley Dorito had also been spotted less than a week earlier, on November 4th.

Ghost Lights: Wales, 1905

In January of 1905, a Welsh family reported seeing three Ghost Lights "hovering above a certain farmhouse." The eyewitness described them as "three lamps about three yards apart," and said that the Ghost Lights jumped, "brilliant and dazzling," in the sunlight of the hot day.

The reporter's entire family witnessed the event, which lasted approximately 10 minutes, and remains unexplained.

A 1904 report of Ghost Lights in Wales may be related.  It, too, remains unexplained.

Ghost Lights: Wales, 1904

Ghost Lights are a particular form of unexplained phenomenon involving phosphorescent spheres thought to be supernatural or paranormal in nature. Ghost Lights are often associated with specific places, times, and events, and have given life to legends throughout the world. In Wales, they are often associated with the Faerie folk, and are termed "faerie fires."

In December of 1904, three witnesses saw a large Ghost Light floating some ways off the ground, but not quite in the sky. In the middle of the light was "something like a bottle or black person," and smaller lights of many colors surrounded the larger sphere.

The 1904 case of Wales Ghost Lights has yet to be explained.

USO off Delarof - 1945

The crew of the U.S. Army transport Delarof reported a USO some 200' in diameter off the Alaskan Coast around sunset one night in the summer of 1945. The object burst from the sea about a mile from the Delarof, ascended briefly, then doubled-back and circled the ship at least twice before flying away.

USO off the Victoria - 1845

In 1861, Professor Baden Powell published the reports of several eyewitnesses who claimed they saw an "unidentified submersible object," or USO, off the side of the brig, Victoria, in 1845.

According to the Report of the British Association (1861), the entire crew of the Victoria saw three bright, luminous objects emerge from the sea and launch into the sky. The men say the USO remained visible for some 10 minutes.

Powell include the report from someone who witnessed the event while on-land. This eyewitness said the USO were "five times the size of the moon" and bore "streamerlike" appendages he likened to sails.

Skyquakes - The Moodus Phenomenon

The Moodus phenomena is a now satisfactorily explained curiosity which had perplexed men for ages. Explained variously as "cracks" in the distance, cannon fire, or soft thunderclaps seeming to originate from the air itself, author Jerome Clark termed them simply "skyquakes," and their history stretches back at least as far as the 16th-Century (recorded, anyway).

The Moodus phenomena was well-noted around Connecticut (where they were termed the Moodus Noises), as well as in India, New Jersey, and elsewhere across the world. American Indian legends attributed these "skyquakes" to evil spirits, while God-fearing, white settlers blamed the Indians for summoning devils. Some investigators in the 20th-Century even attributed skyquakes to UFO activity.

American frontiersmen, Lewis and Clark experienced the Moodus Noises!

But research conducted in the 1980s determined that the Moodus phenomena is actually the result of small earthquakes in the area occurring close to the surface. The noises originate from underground, although scientists are not entirely certain how or why the sound travels the way it does.

Skyquakes can be more than just noise:

In 1888, Moodus Noises rang the church bell in Salem, Massachusetts. For six months from 1977 to the summer of 1978, Americans heard "booms" up and down the East Coast. Government agencies investigated and determined that about 1/3 of the noises could be attributed to aircraft; the rest remain unexplained, but are assumed to be the periodic Moodus phenomena, or "skyquakes."

The Cryptozoological Curiosity of Wetzel Kangaroo Beer

For a solid decade -- 1957 - 1967 -- residents in and around Coon Rapids, Minneapolis repeatedly encountered at least two kangaroos. The wood behind the suburban Anoka County Fairgrounds is where they are believed to have lived, though they were spotted as far away as Nebraska, sometimes hundreds of miles apart from one another.

A local brewer, Charles Wetzel, bore witness to one of the kangaroos, inspiring him to brew the Wetzel Kangaroo Beer. In fact, it turns out that there is a thriving microbrewery scene involving cryptids and cryptozoological, which is covered quite well by Cryptobrewology dotCom.

Redesigning Efforts Underway

I know I said I wasn't going to redesign The OddBlog, but there are changes afoot. And I may redesign The OddBlog.

While I love this template (generously provided by a third-party whose name escapes me, but is available somewhere on here), I need more room. Aside from that, the purpose here has always been to make it easier for researchers and armchair enthusiasts to find actual stories, folklore, theories, and information pertaining to the subjects we cover, and the current format simply does not facilitate this.

Blogger has a new(ish?) feature that allows me to choose only the tags I want you to see. I am playing with this now. If you are having problems finding anything or have any suggestions, please let me hear them!

Thanks.

PA Psychic Goes Gangster

Authorities say a fortune-telling couple fears for their life after being threatened by a rival psychic with a gun -- and this is not the first time such charges have been brought against the guy!

Stephen Mitchell of Pennsylvania is said to have become enraged when George and Shirley Thompson started advertising their psychic business near Mitchell's own fortune-telling establishment. He then reportedly confronted Mrs. Thompson with a gun and threatened her and her children.

Though an unconfirmed source claiming to be Stephen Mitchell's wife said the accusations were false, but Mitchell is facing similar allegations elsewhere. Police also doubt the veracity of the claims, but are investigating.

Graff Adds 'Graff Pink' to Esteemed Collection

The record for the highest amount ever paid for a diamond is now $46 million, paid by Lawrence Graff of London's Graff Jewelry for the "fancy, intense pink" diamond he immediately rechristened The Graff Pink.

The Graff Pink is 29.78 carats and joins the Wittelsbach-Graff Blue, purchased two years ago for the then highest amount ever paid for a diamond ($24.3 million). Graff outraged some in the community when he cut the Wittelsbach-Graff Blue, but the Graff Pink is said to have an internal flaw that may be repairable with shaping.

Patty Bigbee: Baby-Seller

Authorities are looking into allegations that a grandmother who tried to sell her granddaughter may have sold her own daughter years earlier.

45-year-old Patty Bigbee of Tampa, Florida, was arrested for trying to sell her infant grandson to her biological daughter, Danielle Skiver, whom she had given-up for adoption 26 years earlier, for a cool $300k. Investigators say they have now uncovered evidence that Bigbee may have sold Skiver over 25 years ago! Bigbee and Skiver, 27, had not seen one another since then, but found one another through Facebook and have been talking since July.

Skiver contacted authorities when Bigbee offered her the 11-month-old boy. She later learned that Bigbee had extorted her adoptive parents into paying her to avoid "wanting the baby [Skiver] back."

The grandson's mother, Bigbee's other daughter, was in on the plot to sell the child, but Bigbee planned on cutting her out of the deal. Both Bigbee and her conspiring daughter have been arrested, as has Bigbee's 42-year-old boyfriend. The baby is now a ward of the state.

'Apostle' Decrees USB Satanic

The "Apostle" Welder Saldanha of the Paz do Senhor Amado sect claims USB connections are Satanic because the symbol resembles the trident of Satan. The cult, whose name translates into "Peace of the Beloved Lord," allowed its followers to trade-in their USB cords and connections for those more in-line with the Word of Jesus Christ.

I do not know if said Apostle has heard of FireWire, but I tend to think he wouldn't approve.

Ghost Adventures - Fort Chaffee

Ghost Adventures - Ft. ChaffeeThe Ghost Adventures guys head to their biggest location yet: Fort Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas -- 30,000 acres of haunted military complex. Fort Chaffee has been home to German POWs as well as Cuban refugees, and has seen hundreds of deaths during its 40-year history. Soldiers trained for combat within the fort's boundaries, but no one could have prepared for the influx of Cuban refugees Fort Chaffee saw in the 1980s.

When Cuba opened its doors for their unwanted citizens to leave, thousands of mental patients and criminals became permanent residents of Fort Chaffee. There were constant fights and stabbings on the grounds of what became a prison for refugees. This turmoil eventually escalated into a full-scale riot.

Fort Chaffee has also been home to a few famous, and infamous, individuals: Both John Lennon's murderer and Elvis Presley once called the complex home. With over 30,000 acres and a plenty of history, the Ghost Adventures crew definitely has their work cut-out for them.

Tennessee - January, 1934: Carnivorous Kangaroo or Chupacabra?

In January of 1934, rural Tennessee was under attack from a creature, or creatures, eyewitnesses reported as "fast as lightning" that "looked like a giant kangaroo."  The creature was said to leap and jump about fields, but also attack geese, pets, and ducks.  Kangaroo are vegetarian and generally considered docile.

The outbreak was carried by newspapers nationwide, but largely as a means for ridicule.  Yet eyewitnesses refused to back-down.  A report in the Chattanooga Daily Times even "corroborated" one attack in which, "A kangaroolike beast visited the community and killed dogs left and right, and that's all there is to it."  However, the rash of sightings came and went within that single month, and killer, carnivorous kangaroo have never been reported in or around the area since, leading many to dismiss the incident as a hoax.

But this was nearly 50 years before the legend of the chupacabra became widespread.  Could the carnivorous kangaroo attacks in 1934 Tennessee have been the work of a chupacabra, or did a roo just happen to find its way down South from its more natural habitat (kangaroo have been spotted in many states north of Tennessee) and go a little mad on some animals it may have considered threatening?

Catholic Church Held Exorcist Weekend

The Catholic Church registered well over 100 priests and bishops for a two-day weekend workshop in Baltimore over the November 12th, 2010 weekend. The workshop was to train the attendees in the ritual of Exorcism.

According to an Illinois Bishop, "a small group of priests" claim to receive requests for exorcisms from across the continental United States, but very few are trained to perform the Exorcism rite. A staple of modern, American, horror cinema (thanks in large part to the Oscar-winning The Exorcist from 1973, based on the book of the same name by William Peter Blatty), Exorcism is a very real and scared Catholic rite.

Though extremely rare, exorcisms do take place in modern America. Most professionals believe victims of "dæmonic possession" to be mentally ill; most consider them "paranoid schizophrenic," a classification some medical communities around the world have since dropped.

There Are Kangaroos in Wisconsin

There are kangaroo in the American state of Wisconsin.

There was an outbreak of kangaroo sightings in and around the Wisconsin area in the 1970s and '80s, as well as across several other states. In 1978, two Polaroids showing a large kangaroo standing alongside a Menomonee Falls highway emerged. An expert likened the creature in the pictures to the brush kangaroo indigenous to Tasmania.

In January of 2005, authorities captured a 150-lb. kangaroo in Dodgeville, Wisconsin. Eyewitnesses had called for days before police investigated. No one knows where the marsupial came from.

Dead Man Arrested for Kidnapping

Thomas Steven Sanders, declared legally dead since 1994, has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 12-year-old girl whose body was found last month. Once in custody, authorities learned Sanders had lived in several states over the last 20+ years he had been missing, supporting himself through various blue-collar jobs. The child's mother remains missing and police fear Sanders may have harmed her.

Sanders has lived and worked in Tennessee, Georgia, Nevada, Louisiana, and even Mississippi -- the state which declared him dead seven years after he abandoned his family in 1987.

Poacher Kills Arresting Game Warden

31-year-old game warden, David Grove, stopped a felon after catching him "spotlighting" a deer. While partially handcuffed, 27-year-old Christopher Lynn Johnson shot Grove with a .45 handgun. Johnson then fled the scene and claims to have later shot-off the handcuffs. A passenger with Johnson at the time managed to leave the vehicle but may still face charges.

According to authorities, Grove was in the process of arresting Johnson for felony possession of a handgun when the incident occurred. Investigators later recovered the body of a buck, believed to be the one Johnson dazzled with a high-powered spotlight then shot.

Grove was shot four times. He is the first Pennsylvania game warden to have been killed in the line of duty in 95 years.

Ghost Adventures: La Palazza - Las Vegas

The latest Ghost Adventures episode finds the guys investigating in their home town of Las Vegas, where fortunes are won and lost. Known as a place to have fun, Las Vegas also has a dark side. In an historical neighborhood which has been home to the mafia, there are countless stories about dark events.

There is an excessively aggressive entity within La Palazza, one of the stately mansions in the neighborhood. The spirit is said to physically attack visitors, and is even blamed for a fire at the estate. Former owners of house were constantly frightened by voices, growls, and attacks.

A former owner of the house tells Zak about one incredible incident that happened when, while entertaining some guests, a glass was knocked from his wine rack. The owner taunted the spirit until he was choked by an unseen force. Guests at the house recall seeing two deep imprints on his neck. The ghosts here don't like to be taunted, which makes it the exact type of location the GA guys get excited to investigate.

The Strange Case of the Ringing Rocks

The Ringing Rocks are commonly accepted as a natural phenomenon which no one completely understands. Ringing Rocks dot the Pennsylvania (PA) landscape, and have even been used as instruments in a public performance (June, 1890 - Buckwampum Historical Society).

Ringing Rocks are formed of diabase, yet only around 1/3 of them ring. Richard Faas found that the rocks produce subaudial frequencies that cannot be heard by the human ear. Ringing Rocks are found all over the world, and scientists have no answers.

Increased Risk of Stroke with Vitamin E

New research indicates that Vitamin E may increase the risk of certain strokes by as much as 22% in some users. The exact amount at which this increase occurs is unknown, but the study shows a strong connection between elevated levels of Vitamin E and hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in the brain).

However, this is the least common type of stroke and Vitamin E appears to cut the risk of ischaemic strokes, the most common type, by up to 10%. Still, hemorrhagic strokes are associated with more damage, leading experts to warn against using too much Vitamin E. Increased exercise and better diet is the alternative.

Zimbabwean Killed by Pride of Lions in Shower

A Zimbabwean tourist in an open wildlife conservation area was killed by a pride of lions while showering last Friday. Though details of the attack are still emerging, experts blame the attack on poaching. Earlier in 2010, eight villagers were similarly attacked by lions hundreds of miles down the river.

Experts say a lack of food has lead villagers to poach lions, traumatizing the animals. It is believed they may be targeting humans as a result.

Ghost Adventures - USS Hornet

The Ghost Adventures crew investigates the USS Hornet, often called a floating coffin. It was one of the most decorated aircraft carriers in World War II, during which it saw numerous battles. The USS Hornet and her crew were responsible for taking down over 1,000 aircraft and sinking 76 ships. But while WWII was bad enough, the even darker side of the Hornet is that it had the highest suicide rate of any ship in the Navy.

Although the ship is now resting peacefully in San Francisco, many people believe the spirits of the crew are still fighting the war. The sick bay is home to countless claims of paranormal happenings. One visitor plays an EVP of someone screaming, "GET OUT!"

Between the pain of war, the cramped quarters, and the length of time these men spent at sea, there is plenty reason for their spirits and energy to linger on the ship. One of the best examples of evidence the boys catch is the voice of a man yelling, "RUN," as though the ship were under attack.

Zak discusses the USS Hornet here. Check out Ghost Adventures tonight on the Travel Channel (check local listings).

Record-Breaking Alligator Captured in Florida

Tres Ammerman was amazed when he caught a 14' alligator on Halloween, 2010. The gator, weighing-in at just over 654-lbs., is believed to be between 50 and 60 years old. Ammerman's catch is 3" longer than the state record, which was set in 1997. Ammerman is selling his catch to a taxidermist at $1000 per foot, for a net of $14,000 USD.

The largest alligator on record was caught in Louisiana and measured 19'.

Vatican Castigates Opus Angelorum Sect

The Vatican has decreed the Opus Angelorum sect "wayward," and warns anyone who might come into contact with followers to distance themselves. Specifically, the Vatican says it has reason to suspect the Opus Angelorum is distributing propaganda associating itself with traditional Catholicism.

The Vatican basically gave Opus Angelorum a pass, so long as it promised not to distribute or mention information relating to its core sect beliefs, which were formed largely by its founder, Gabriele Bitterlich. One of the most dangerous of which is that women who have had abortions are possessed by demonic entities.

Bitterlich claimed to have been directed by an Archangel with whom she was in contact. This Archangel coached Bitterlich, and she discovered the names of the angels and demons fighting for control of peoples' souls.

The Opus Angelorum operates mostly throughout India, Brazil, and Germanic Europe.

Great Sphinx' Protective Wall Uncovered

Archaeologists stumbled upon a protective wall around the Great Sphinx almost completely accidentally, while doing routine excavation work. The wall is said to have been built by King Thuthmose IV, following a dream in which the Sphinx spoke to him and said it was choking on the desert sand. So far, the team has excavated three walls, all built during the reign of King Thuthmose IV.

Abstaining from Recent Bigfoot Sightings

Some readers may know there has been a small "outburst" of supposed Bigfoot sightings in various regions as late, but I am not posting them yet because they lack basically all credibility. This is a blog, not a news source, but it is a resource for enthusiasts and investigators alike, and I don't want to follow a story for weeks on-end only to learn it was a monkey in a man's suit or something. Honestly, I simply don't have the time.

However, I did want to mention them in case you're interested. They've been widely-reported on other sites and blogs, some of which will follow them through to their end. Also, once (if) the investigations into these sightings begin, I'll bring you more on them then. Several of them were just too specious to bother with.

Happy Halloween!

Sorry I missed the opportunity to wish you a happy Halloween, but we sat through a bad horror movie marathon and I couldn't miss that. Yes, I suppose my life may be considered "sad" by some, but I really enjoy things like that and I had a great time doing it.

Anyway, the Chill updates are coming, there were just too many complications and even if I'd met the deadline (yesterday), it simply wouldn't have been done and I'd have been revising it well into the new deadline (Christmas / New Year's). There will be new content well before then, if you care to check, but the new deadline is when I hope to have everything finalized.

As I've said before, I have more responsibilities now and am having to cut-back on posting as often as I used to, and this carries over to other aspects of my life. But everything's cool; the content will get there, I'm just still learning how to set realistic deadlines and be flexible, set priorities, and so forth.
