Happy New Year!

Everyone at The OddBlog hopes all of you have a safe and happy New Year!

Don't forget your black-eyed peas and sauerkraut and all of that this year; I often wondered if 2011 wasn't any better because people forgot to eat their lucky foods this time last year. I honestly do not even know for sure if you eat them today or tomorrow, but whenever you do it, do so with happy thoughts for 2012.

Anyway, we'll see you then!

Things What Done Fell from the Sky: Ancient Satellite Found in Namibia?

Several days before a large, metallic sphere landed in Namibia, residents reported several loud explosions. The sphere is made of an "alloy known to man" and is about 14" in circumference. It is hollow and appears to have been melded together from two parts. Researchers found that a number of these strange spheres have been falling around the world over the last 20 years, but they have no reasonable explanation as to why they are falling or where they came from.

Late-Night, End of the Year Posting

Sorry for going off-schedule, but I do have some deadlines to beat before the New Year and I want to be free for the weekend to enjoy myself. I don't have much to do - I have no solid plans or anything - but I want the freedom should something present itself. I also want to be able to take-off the weekend with the rest of the free world (or most of it), so I'm trying to clear-up a few things before the end of the weekend.

We'll be back to regular posting after the New Year.

Dutch Men Eat Each Other on TV

Two television presenters for the program Guinea Pigs underwent surgery so they could taste one another's prepared flesh. One had meat removed from his buttock, while the other had a piece of meat removed from his stomach. The meat was then cooked and served with a side of asparagus.

While some are calling the show a hoax, the broadcasting company and presenters disagree. However, both said they had their fill of human flesh and would not do the stunt again because it would involve more surgery.

Christmas

I know I haven't been updating as often as I usually do lately, and for that I apologize, but things IRL heated-up slightly with the holidays and I've been behind the eight-ball on the blogs. I decided to take a break this year, even though I have few plans. I'll be gone for Christmas day but only for a bit, and since it's almost the weekend, I figured you wouldn't be able to tell really, but I wanted to let you know.

I don't know what next week will bring, but I am trying to be a little less aggressive until after the holidays. I have no idea what to expect then, as I have other projects I want to pursue. I've been doing this for five some-odd years now, after all - I deserve a little time away.

But I actually have some more stories to bring you in the interim, so I don't know what to tell you.

Two-Headed Baby Born in Brazil

A healthy, two-headed baby boy(s) was born to a Brazilian woman. This is the second time this year that a Brazilian baby has been born with two heads. The first time, the baby died due to lack of oxygen to one of the brains.

In these cases, one of the heads is usually removed, but both babies' brains appear to be functioning well and the child is healthy, complicating matters. In addition to the heads, both babies have their own spines.

Pen in Stomach for 25 Years Still Writes

A 76-year-old British woman vaguely recalled swallowing a felt-tip pen some 25 years ago after one showed up on an x-ray of her stomach. She had been feeling ill previously. Once removed, the pen still wrote!

Things What Done Fell from the Sky: Chunk of Metal

A 5-lb. chunk of metal that appears to be from a large machine plunged through the sheet metal of a building in Plymouth, Massachusetts. No one was injured; the hunk of metal landed in a closet area. The FAA confirmed that there are no flight patterns over the building.

Where the piece of metal came from, and why it dropped from the sky, remain unexplained.

Injured

Sorry, but I hurt myself walking. I slipped on a game box and busted my knee and lip well enough that it's taken a while to heal. It has already been a week, if that gives you some idea. I'm still busted-up pretty good.

Thousands of Birds Die in Utah

Thousands of dead birds may have mistaken parking lots for ponds in southern Utah, as they were found scattered throughout the state. Several thousand were saved by rescue missions, but many died from the mass crash landings. The surviving birds were released into an actual body of water.

One spokesperson said it was the worst downing he had ever seen in the area, and more widespread than others.

Things What Done Fell from the Sky: Apples Over Coventry

About 20 yards of Coventry (in England) was inexplicably showered with apples Monday evening.  There were volatile weather patterns in the area and experts suggested that a "mini-tornado" or wind vortex sucked-up apples as small objects, redepositing them over Coventry once the force died down.  However, there has been no satisfactory explanation for the shower of apples as of yet.

Other theories include a plane passing overhead and hoaxsters.  The area was covered in green sludge.  The apples that fell over Coventry were said to be green and hard.

Man Goes on Rampage with Toy Light Saber

An Oregon man went on a rampage with a toy light saber at a local Toys R Us store Wednesday night, but no one was seriously harmed. Police say the 33-year-old was still attacking people in the store's parking lot while screaming incoherently when they arrived. They attempted to taser the man twice, but he used the light saber to break the leads. Eventually, the man was arrested.

New Dinosaur DIscovered in Vault

A new dinosaur in the Triceratops family was discovered in the vaults of the Natural History Museum by a team of researchers. The bones were previously considered worthless and lay undiscovered since they were excavated in 1916. The research team decided to take a second look. The full article can be found here.

Mythbusters Misfires

During the taping of a segment for the popular Discovery show Mythbusters, a cannon lifted during firing, launching the cannonball through a residential neighborhood and into a minivan. The show's producers are already meeting with insurance carriers and agents to pay for the damages to several homes, as well as the minivan. In one instance, the cannonball raced through a bedroom where three people slept.

No one was hurt in the misfire.

Air Force Academy Caters to Pagans

The Air Force Academy maintains an $80,000 outside worship center for pagans. This may be an answer to a case that was ultimately dismissed, in which the Air Force was accused of aggressively proselytizing non-Christians, but it offers non-Christians a place for worship. It is aimed at those who have religions based on nature, including Druids and witches.

According to statistics, fewer than 5000 cadets identified themselves as pagan.
