In Peru, anyone who occupies a parcel of land for more than a day has to be systematically evicted, a process that can take up to two years or longer. This is the problem facing archaeologists and preservers of the Nazca Lines, as squatters have moved into the area. Experts say they have already destroyed a Nazca-era cemetery and are encroaching on several of the figures.
One of the squatters denied all of this, even the existence of the Nazca lines. They are famously only visible from the air. Authorities say they receive nearly 200 reports of encroachment each year - a stiff number when compared to the the handful of cases nearby countries receive.
