Apologies

I know things have been sparse the last few weeks, but it was largely due to weather and a lack of a decent computer. I've talked about getting the new computer and how I was having to use the backup box, which only has 1GB RAM and a bad hard drive. I couldn't install all the programs I use on it and I have been unplugging the modem at the first sign of bad weather, which we've had a lot of here the last few weeks. I haven't been able to make any changes or updates to the entire website for the last six weeks or more, and I haven't been able to file my taxes because of this, so it hasn't just affected this blog.

As I said the other day, I got the new computer and I'm happy to report that things are going as well as could be expected. I have installed most of the programs I use and have even gotten some of those programs configured, but I am still working. I also have to admit that I bought a new computer game and have been playing it incessantly since last week. I needed some entertainment, though.

Gorilla on Loose in Alabama?

You may have heard or read about this story. It was in the headlines last week and even Stephen Colbert mentioned it on his show. The reason I didn't run it is because it mentions the creature may have been a bear later on in the very article. The closest known zoo is some 150 miles away and the only gorilla there is still in captivity, so my assumption was that it was most likely a bear. There is always the offhand chance of a Bigfoot sighting, but Occam's Razor says it was a bear.

Interestingly, a gorilla at a New York zoo bit its keeper and escaped even more recently. The 400-pound beast, known as Koga, was subdued and recaptured shortly after it got loose, though.

New Computer

I just got the new computer - the latest in a long string that I've been forced to purchase due to continued lightning strikes on the phoneline - and am setting it up and working out the kinks and so forth. I will probably be away for a few days doing this, though I cannot say for sure. Luckily, I use a third-party bookmarks system, so all my bookmarks are intact.

There are also storms in the area, as there have been off and on all week, and I am unplugging the modem when the weather gets bad in the area. This is another reason things have been slow here lately.

Man Has Heart Attack at Heart Attack Grill

The jocularly named Heart Attack Grill nearly had a fatality on its hands when a man suffered a heart attack while eating in the Las Vegas restaurant. The Heart Attack Grill claims a menu "Worth Dying For!" and serves a butterfat milkshake. Luckily, the unnamed man survived his ordeal and restaurant owners assured everyone that it was no stunt.

Cupcake ATM

The cupcake chain Sprinkles announced it is opening a cupcake dispensary that is actually a 24-hour ATM. The pink machines dispense cupcakes instead of money. They will even carry a line of cakes for your dog. The cupcake ATM is set to premiere this spring.

The Dog-Headed Pig Monster of Nambia

Nambian residents are arming themselves and traveling in groups out of fear of a "dog-headed pig monster" that is said to roam the area. Eyewitnesses claim they have seen the beast attacking dogs and other small animals near the village. Many believe the creature to be a black magician's familiar: a pet that has magical properties.

The dog-headed pig monster is said to be mostly white with broad and hairless shoulders like that of a pig. Attacks on domestic animals were reported in 2009, as well. In those attacks, no one saw the beast that drained the blood of the animals, but it was said to have left tracks similar to those of a dog. The tracks were followed, but they disappeared suddenly in the middle of an open field, leading some to believe the creature may be able to fly.
