More Indian animal news, this one from the state of Bihar, where a dog is the defendant in a court case.
The dog has already been dragged into court once before on charges of violence. In fact, Chhotu, the defendant, was sentenced to death in 2003 for attacking villagers. But the pup's owner says it has only bitten burglars. Animal rights activists managed to overturn the death sentence then, but Chhotu received a summons for further attacks and is now in court.
Apparently, it has been on its very best behavior in the courtroom, supporting its owner's claims that it is only trying to protect her and her home from greedy villagers who are trying to burglarize her. According to her lawyer, the villagers have been trying to break into her home to steal the deed to her land, but they have given up after being bitten by Chhotu, which the woman has raised "as her own child."

In rereading this tonight, I wanted to comment:
ReplyDeleteMy neighbor has a dog she loves, but treats rudely (usually) - you know, just like any other member of the family.
Earlier today, we were talking and she playfully slapped me on the shoulder. I wasn't thinking and reeled as a sight-gag and the dog started barking and rushed me!
We both calmed him down, but it was pretty funny to us and obviously rather dramatic to the poor dog.
I always believed Chhotu's defense, but I wanted to add that bit of testimonial to the mix.
