Many people who have been clinically dead report near-death experiences. Some claim to have seen tunnels and/or bright lights, while others say they "floated" toward the ceiling and could see the doctors working on them below.
Now, an intensive care doctor and researcher has developed a plan to find out if consciousness is actually separate from the bodily life.
Dr. Sam Parnia is heading a study because he feels medical science has not done enough research into this phenomena. Several theaters have been equipped with special shelving, on which pictures have been placed that are visible only from the ceiling. He is hoping any near-death experience sufferers will be able to correctly identify the pictures.
The study will include 1500 patients undergoing such operations as heart surgery and will take three years.
