Speared Kangaroo Should Recover

Australian wildlife officials were horrified to find a kangaroo speared through the mouth by an arrow. It had apparently managed to survive for at least a week on its own, despite its condition. "It's just unbelievable, I can't believe that anyone would do something so cruel," one official told the BBC.

The injured kangaroo was found in the same region as another, which was shot in the rump. Australian officials recently told the population to feel free to eat the roo meat. Further, the Australian army is actively culling some 6000 near the capitol. The kangaroo population has undergone a small boom lately and many have become more aggressive toward humans. However, cruelty toward the creatures has also been on the rise as late.

Wildlife Victoria has posted a $7600 reward for information leading to the capture of whomever did this. Meanwhile, the kangaroo which was shot in the mouth is being looked after by a veterinarian who "remains optimistic" that it will make a full recovery.

  1. Authorities arrested a man in conjunction with the attacks after two raids on homes in the outer Melbourne area. They seized two bows, ammunition, and camouflaged clothing.

The unnamed man is 27 and is out on bond. He was charged with four counts of aggravated cruelty, hunting protected wildlife, and reckless conduct endangering life.

The kangaroos underwent surgery and are expected to make full recoveries.
