Colorado Woman Cites Vampire for Wreck

A Colorado woman claims to have spotted a vampire in the middle of a dirt road in Grand Valley. She told police she put her SUV in reverse, startled by the creature, and crashed into a canal. Her husband came to the scene and took the uninjured woman home. Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved.

Bear Kills Man Near Yellowstone Park

A 70-year-old man hiked into an area near Yellowstone National Park where a grizzly bear had been trapped and released earlier in the day. When he had not returned after several hours, his wife went looking for him and told researchers in the area that he was missing. They found his body at the site where the grizzly bear had been captured earlier that day.

Friends of Frank Evert say the botanist was well aware of grizzlies in the Kitty Creak area, as he had called one friend and asked him about warning signs which had been posted there. Evert was not armed, nor was he carrying bear spray (powerful mace), and no one can say how it is that the 70-year-old managed to avoid running directly into the researchers leaving the area, unless he wandered off the trail at some point. Authorities recovered Evert's body later that night.

The Kitty Creak area has been closed-off indefinitely, as the grizzly bear is still loose. Researchers hope to recapture the one they tranquilized that day, and run DNA tests to determine if it was the one that killed Frank Evert. An investigation into whether or not the researchers followed correct procedure has been launched.

Man Charged in 'Werewolf' Killing

Thomas Masaryk doesn't deny shooting and killing his brother-in-law in his front yard -- in fact, he called a priest to witness the shooting and was standing over the body when police arrived!  No, Masaryk freely admits to shooting his brother-in-law through the heart, killing him, but he says he committed no crime, because his brother-in-law was a werewolf.  In Romania, it is not a crime to kill a werewolf, nor has it been for 500 years.

"It's true," Father Batistel said, "I... saw him change before my eyes!  Hair sprouted on his face, and hands and fangs grew right out of his mouth.  His eyes glowed fiery red -- and he began to groan and moan like a caged beast."

Masaryk, a used car salesman, believes 42-year-old Dumbrava Serghiescu killed dozens of people, including Masaryk's sister.  He used a .38 caliber pistol loaded with a single, silver bullet.  The bullet was made from a crucifix said to have been blessed by the Pope.

Masaryk has been charged with first-degree murder.

Boned-Up

Dan Aziere suffers from a rare genetic disorder known as multiple hereditary exostoses (MHE), or Osteochondroma, which causes benign tumors, made of bone and cartilage, to grow from the surface of his bones, resulting in more "bones" than the 206 most adults have. In Dan Aziere's case, approximately 50 more bones!

Aziere has had 19 surgeries to remove 42 bones since age five. He has extra bones in his leg, ankles, knees, hips, arms, wrists, back, chest, almost all of his fingers, and elsewhere. These bones range in size from about that of a pencil eraser to 4" long x 2" wide x 1" high. Dan's father also suffers from MHE, though his case is thankfully far milder. His late brother also had the condition and two of his three children have MHE. Luckily, neither child has suffered any problems from the disorder as of yet.

For Dan Aziere though, MHE has been debilitating. During an operation he underwent as a teenager, the doctor severed the sensory nerves in his leg, resulting in partial paralysis (foot drop) and a loss of feeling in the top of his leg. He has also battled with depression, though he says he had an epiphany one day which changed his attitude for the better, and he now strives to maintain that. "My motto in life is that things can always be worse," Dan Aziere told reporters.

Aziere's physician, Dr. John Dunleavy -- an orthopedic surgeon from the Danbury Orthopedic Associates in Danbury, CT -- said MHE affects 1-2 in 100,000 and that he has seen fewer than five cases over the last seven or eight years. Chele Zelina, president of the MHE Coalition in Ohio, said "1600 families in 57 countries... are registered with us as having MHE. Fourteen of those families live in Connecticut."

Bigfoot Encounter: North Carolina

Tim Peeler of Cleveland County lives right beside the South Mountain State Park, which is one of the least developed recreational areas in North Carolina. Peeler says he heard screeching and grunting sounds in the early morning of June 5th, so came outside to check on his dogs. That is when he claims to have encountered a 10'-tall man with yellowish-blond hair and a long beard and "tough-talked" him off the property, though the creature later returned. Peeler claims the creature, which he assumes to be a Bigfoot, had six fingers on each hand.

Reporters note that there were several reports of a Bigfoot-type creature between 1978 and 1979, as well. At that time, residents reported seeing a black-haired creature which walked on two feet. Hunts were conducted and large prints were found, but the sightings suddenly stopped in 1979. One theory of the time held that it was a panther.

World's Oldest Mom Dying of Complications

Rajo Devi Lohan risked her life to give birth to her daughter at 70, after a lifetime of being barren, but is now dying. Lohan says her doctors never warned her of the risks involved in giving birth at such an advanced age. Her daughter was born just 18 months ago.

Rajo Devi Lohan received IVF treatments from a controversial clinic in India. A 66-year-old woman, who also received the treatments, has since become the oldest woman in history to give birth to triplets. Doctors fear she may also fall victim to the complications Mrs. Lohan now faces.

Lohan says she has no regrets, though. Her sister has moved-in to help her and her 73-year old husband care for the toddler and their farm. Rajo Devi Lohan was ordered to bed rest following a complicated C-section delivery, but instead, she knelt each day to milk their buffalo. She is now too weak to lift her child or tend her home, and has taken to her bed.

The doctor of both women dismisses the claim that their pregnancies were in any way responsible for their current medical issues. It is a stigma in India for a wife not to be able to bear her husband children.

St. Santa Rosa Died of Heart Condition

X-ray technology helped researchers determine the death of St. Santa Rosa, a saint of the Catholic Church who is believed to have wielded powers of resurrection, and to have escaped a burning pyre unharmed. The saint's body has lain in-state for 700 years, until experts were asked to help treat and stop damage in the 1990s.

While historical researchers uncovered documents suggesting Santa Rosa may have succumbed to Tuberculosis at, or around, the age of 18, x-ray evidence shows it is more likely to have been a blood clot in the heart. Researchers think Santa Rosa may have been afflicted with Cantrell's Syndrome, a rare heart condition, though more research is needed for confirmation. No trace of TB was found in the saint's body.

Rabid Foxes in SC Attack!

This one is as much a public service announcement as it is an "odd" post, because rabid wild animals is about as natural as you can get -- but attacks on humans by foxes are almost unheard of.  In Moore County, South Carolina though, at least two men have been attacked by rabid fox(es) this week alone!

A 22-year old man was attacked while biking.  Though he struck the animal with his bicycle, it continued pursuing him.  A second successful strike dispatched the fox.  This may have been the same fox which, emboldened by rabies, attacked an 11-year old boy in the same area the next day.  Luckily, the child was able to pin the fox down to the ground until it tired somewhat. He then brought the fox home with him.  The creature later tested positive for rabies, but the child was already undergoing treatment for the same.

Veterinarians have but one means of testing for rabies: Decapitation of the animal.  This is why you are told to collect any animal that bites, scratches, or otherwise attacks you -- if possible, of course.  Many times, rabies injections -- a lengthy, painful process -- are unnecessary, and the veterinarian can observe the animal under controlled conditions for several days before deciding the animal must be destroyed for more tests.

Coincidence or Fate?: It's a Small World After All

While going through childhood photographs, Donna Voutsinas came upon a photograph of herself and friends at Walt Disney World in Florida.  But, what caught her eye was a man in the immediate background pushing a stroller.  That man turned out to be her future father-in-law, pushing her future fiance!

Stuck in Time

Following two car crashes, Michelle Philpots lost her short-term memory in 1997; she remembers most things about her life up to 1994, but nothing beyond that.  Philpots' husband has to remind her daily that they were married 13 years ago, sometimes even having to get a photo album to prove it.  She keeps Post-It notes around her house to remind her of things she knows she will not remember the next day.

Michelle Philpots suffers from anterograde amnesia, a condition which prevents the patient from creating new memories or recalling recent ones.  She suffered brain injuries in a 1985 crash, and again in a 1990 collision.  She appeared to recover but later began having seizures and forgetting things.  While rare, anterograde amnesia does exist.

Kenyan Authorities Hunting Serial Killer Cult Leader

"I managed 17 and there were 83 to go," 32-year-old Kenyan, Philip Onyancha, confessed to police.  Onyancha says he was recruited into a cult by a teacher who told him to murder 100 women and drink their blood "for good fortune."  Onyancha has lead police and media around the country for three days, taking them to the sites of unresolved murders, uncovering four bodies, and closing many cases for police -- though many Kenyans are suspect, believing authorities are finding a convenient end in Onyancha to too many unsolved cases.

Meanwhile, the female teacher he claims recruited and instructed him is nowhere to be found.  She no longer works at the school Onyancha attended and was not at work Thursday.  Her whereabouts remain unknown.

Chinese Toddler Awakes from Coma Addicted to Cigarettes, Beer

Three-year old Ya Wen awoke from a coma brought on by a car crash a year ago, craving cigarettes and beer. She began by sneaking her father's, then started "buying" her own at a local market, who thought she was getting them for her dad. Further, her mother says three beers is now nothing to the tot, and she refuses to wear anything but boys' clothes. She says young Ya Wen now acts and speaks like an adult.

The father quit smoking and the family moved across town, presumably to a better neighborhood, but say the child still cries for cigarettes whenever she sees them.

12 Children Die in Ceremony to Ward-Off Bad Luck

Twelve Indonesian children were killed when a suspension bridge on which they were standing collapsed. The children were attending a traditional ceremonial ritual meant to ward-off bad luck in the rural village of Aceh. In all, 37 children fell into the river below, but 25 were rescued; strong currents swept the remaining 12 away. All of the deceased were under 12.

The village had decided to perform the ritual after a measles outbreak.

Vintage Radio Picking-Up Vintage Broadcasts

A 1940's model Pye radio which is not connected to any power source, and "would probably explode if switched on," has been picking-up 1940's-era radio broadcasts, including speeches by Winston Churchill and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. There is no powerful transmitter in the area and technicians who have examined the insides of the radio claim to have found "nothing but cobwebs and spiders."

The radio was purchased in 1962 and is on display at the Montrose Air Station, which is widely regarded as haunted and has been for almost a century. Reports include ghostly figures, turning doorknobs, footsteps, and even full-figure apparitions. While experts have investigated the station many times and explained-away many supposed paranormal sightings and happenings, the radio has even the staunchest skeptic scratching his head.

Broadcasts of the Glenn Miller Orchestra are heard most often. They are said to be faint and last up to a half-hour, off and on, but even though you have to put your ear to the radio to hear it, the broadcast is distinct.

Though the official website of the Montrose Air Station has a section entitled "Ghosts," it shows merely a handful of images without any text, and the radio is not mentioned; it tends to dispel the notion that the heritage center is trying to capitalize on such things.

HGH a Panacea?

I had never heard of hgh spray until now, but to be honest, seeing claims that it will improve everything from strength to memory to sex drive and immune system, I would be very wary of it. Not because I think it dangerous (thought there is that - I have no idea if it is or not), but because I tend to doubt such "miracle cures."

But I am no expert in these matters (nor anything else, for as far as that goes), and some people claim to have gotten pretty good results from human growth hormone, so I suggest you do your research and speak to a professional or two and, if you decide it may be right for you, give it a shot. The spray is supposed to be absorbed into your bloodstream faster than a pill or powder.

Weekend Posting Temporary

I know we've gone back and forth over this issue for years now, but just as in many of the cases where I've had to suspend the usual schedule in the past, this is a temporary thing due to personal issues and so forth.  Basically, you should expect some weekend posting throughout the next several months -- it's probably best to say throughout the summer -- but not necessarily every weekend. I still need some time off here and there!

In short, nothing's really changed; once everything is cleared-up and I get back to my normal schedule in my own life, we will be going back to weekday-only posting here and on the other blogs.  I'll also quit posting these, fairly obvious, alerts. But because the next few months will be... weird, with some weekend posting and probably several weekdays missed, I figured I'd give you the heads-up.

Teen 'Eyeballing' Leads to Trouble

This is not that kind of story (though there is no dearth of them these days); this is actually a story about a new "fad" amongst some teenagers. We were all stupid kids when we were, well, kids - I wrote the book on Stupid many a time, or at least a chapter here and there - but I'm not sure this one ever came-up except maybe on a dare (and well after everyone was already too drunk to feel it):

According to some experts, teenagers have taken to pouring vodka in their eyes! It's called "eyeballin," and they are not doing it to get drunk, but after they are already wasted (like I said...). There are now hundreds of YouTube videos of the act, and some say it is increasingly common at parties and large gatherings.

Experts warn that vodka can actually burn away the top layer of the cornea, eventually leading to blindness, though scarring is more likely. This lesser damage comes with its own perils, including infection.

Fish Oils to Treat Mentally Ill?

An international team using a study group of 81 people in the "high-risk" category for developing mental illness, treated 1/2 with fish oil supplements, and the other half with a placebo, and found that about 1 in 4 high-risk adults could be "protected" from developing mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, by the treatment.

The team considered those with a family history of mental illness, as well as those already exhibiting signs of mental illness, fit the high-risk category. The tested group was treated for three months, and monitored by the team for a year.

Antipsychotic medications often cause more harm than good.

Cat That Stalked Girls is Black Leopard Nicknamed 'Boris'

Mark Fletcher, once a skeptic, has come public with claims of big cats living in England. He says that he filmed a TV spot on the matter some months back and came to the startling conclusion that such a legend was, in fact, all too true. In fact, he claims that the big cat which stalked two young girls last month is not a panther, but a black leopard nicknamed "Boris."

Fletcher says he chose not to use the footage and evidence he had collected in his TV special for fear of causing public panic, but the girls' encounter made him feel so guilty that he decided to come forward.

However, several officials have beaten Fletcher to the punch lately, as many have come forward to state that big cats are absolutely on the prowl in the UK, and one off-duty policeman even caught one on tape. You can read Fletcher's account here.

'The Grim Eater'

A New Zealand funeral home noticed a man who appeared to be in his 40s attending several funerals between March and April who didn't seem to know the deceased. Eventually, employees noticed the man was carrying Tupperware containers in his backpack, which he filled when mourners were not watching. When an employee pulled him aside and told him he was welcome to attend funerals (they are public events), he could no longer take food home with him, he quit coming.

Funeral home employees say he was always quiet and polite. The media nicknamed him "The Grim Eater."

Suspect Targeted Authorities with Voodoo Dolls

Ruben Hernandez, a used car-dealer from Pasadena, California, was accused of fraud in 2008. In 2009, Hernandez was taken into custody following a high-speed car chase. When authorities searched his home, they found "a shrine with a cross and all kinds of skeletons and stuff," as a Los Angeles district attorney described it. At the center of the altar (which is what the "shrine" was) were three effigies, labeled with the DA's name, as well as the names of two investigators. The dolls were also labeled with criminal case numbers, had pins through their eyes, and were dunked upside-down in a container of brown liquid. "Even the U.S. marshals were spooked," the DA said.

Authorities believe Hernandez was a practitioner of Palo Mayombe, a Caribbean religion popular in the days of slavery. The religion is known for its animal sacrifices and curses. The effigies are thought to have been part of a Palo Mayombe ritual. The religion has become popular amongst drug dealers, and experts believe as many as 40,000 Americans follow it.

Hernandez was charged with numerous counts stemming from a house-buying scam in which fake social security numbers were used. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Pacific Isles Growing, Not Sinking

Not long ago, we brought you a story about a Pacific Island which had finally submerged, and reported that scientists were concerned that global warming was set to sink many more like it. In our defense, we merely regurgitated the facts we read; The OddBlog has no scientists on-hand. Now, many outlets are also retracting that part of the story, as new research from different scientists shows the majority of islands in the area are actually growing, as waters recede, not sinking.

The isles of the Federated States of Micronesia are among those which are growing, thanks to the build-up of coral debris and sediment. The scientists involved predict that these islands will still be there a century from now, though none could say if they will be inhabitable.

The study includes 27 islands and spans 60 years. Most of the islands in the study have remained stable, while others have grown - 80% of them, in fact. Yet, the researchers also said residents should not be lulled into thinking they are completely safe, as global warming is causing area waters to rise, and coastal erosion remains a threat.

Highschool 'Fetus' Just a Plant

Authorities were called to a Pittsburgh-area highschool on May 19th to investigate what a custodian thought to be a fetus found in a stairwell. The custodian had previously discovered blood in a girl's bathroom. The Department of Health recovered the object and sent it to the coroner, who determined it was actually "some kind of vegetable-based material," but could not be more specific.

Mexican Authorities Find Corpse Dumping Ground

Mexican authorities say they have discovered an abandoned silver mine where as many as 25 bodies have been dumped over the years by violent drug traffickers and gang members. Police learned of the mine's location and purpose from an arrested criminal.

Police the victims, many of whose hand and feet were bound, appear to have been thrown down a 650' ventilation shaft over an extended period of time. Reports do not say if the victims had been killed before being dumped, or if they were simply bound and thrown to what was certainly their protracted death amongst the other corpses. Police and soldiers are using breathing equipment to recover the bodies.

The mine is located in Taxco, a city in Guerrero, which is a popular, Colonial-era tourist destination, and also a center of the drug-related violence which has plagued Mexico in recent years.

Lady Gaga Orders Ghost Hunt

Pop music sensation, Lady Gaga, recently paid $5000 for ghosthunting equipment to investigate London's O2 Arena before she was set to perform.  Sources say Gaga 'felt the presence of supernatural elements' in the arena and placed an order for specialized ghost-hunting technology from local specialists.

Dan Webb, who owns the ghostbusting firm that provided the equipment, learned that Lady Gaga claims to have had a ghostly encounter which so shook her that she is now using the equipment everywhere she performs.

'Lost' Tomb Rediscovered

In the 19th-Century, archaeologists found the tomb of Pthames, an army chief, treasurer, and royal scribe under Set I and Ramses II's 13th-Century BC reign. Unfortunately, sandstorms buried the tomb and its location was lost to time. Now, Pthames tomb has been rediscovered and modern-day researchers are hoping the mummified remains and sarcophagi in the main chamber, which has yet to be located.

The search for the 3300-year-old "lost" tomb, over 200' in length, has taken five years. It was "lost" in 1885.
